You are typically covered for medical care after an auto accident under one or more of the following: .
1. PIP (Personal Injury Protection) or No-Fault Insurance, covers your treatment for your accident injuries up to $10,000. Additional medical is optional under MedPay coverage. You must see a doctor within 14 days of the accident or you will loose your access to PIP coverage. Seeing Dr. Wheeler satisfies this requirement. You will need to file a claim with your own insurance to access this coverage. We are unaware of any instances where the patient's insurance raised their rates based on filing for PIP benefits. PIP/No Fault insurance can be used whether you or another party was at fault for medical care for you and any passengers of your vehicle. You may also be eligible for benefits if you were the passenger in someone else's car under their PIP coverage, your own PIP coverage or that of your parents.
2. BI or Bodily Injury Coverage is the insurance of the person who caused the accident or the At-fault 3rd Party. This insurance will cover medical care only at the end of treatment. You may want to consult an attorney to help you navigate and negotiate with the BI insurance. Most attorney's offer free consultations and work on a contingency basis which means you have no out of pocket costs. The lawyer gets paid from the settlement.
3. UM or Uninsured Motorist Coverage is an optional coverage under your own policy. This coverage can only be accessed after BI coverages (The other people's insurance) have been exhausted and will typically require assistance from an experienced Personal Injury Attorney.
